Woman dead and two injured in knife rampage in Germany

A woman has been stabbed to death after a knifeman attacked employees at a German company.

A man attacked three employees of the same utility company with a knife in Mellrichstadt, a small town in Bavaria.

A 59-year-old woman lost her life in the attack, two other men, aged 55 and 62, were seriously injured.

A 21-year-old German citizen was arrested at the scene, according to local police. A knife was recovered shortly after.

50 employees, some who reportedly tackled the attacker, are being treated at the office by paramedics.

‘Currently, 50 people are being cared for who witnessed the incident or are otherwise affected,’ Red Cross spokesperson Sohrab Taheri-Sohia, according to German publication Bild.

The woman killed was reportedly stabbed in the neck and upper body.

A police spokesperson told Bild: ‘Caring for the injured is our top priority, as is clarifying the exact circumstances of the crime,’ said the police spokesman.

They added: ‘A police operation is currently underway in Mellrichstadt. Police officers and emergency services are on scene in large numbers.’

Detectives are now investigating the identity of the suspect and establishing a motive as they search his home.

It is still unclear what the knifeman’s connection is to Überlandwerke Rhön, the utility company attacked.

The energy company supplies the entire Rhön region with electricity, employing some 240 people.
