A Good Samaritan rescued a Jack Russell after it got trapped chasing a squirrel 16ft (5m) up a tree.

Keen amateur photographer Kelly Brooks was walking her cockapoos Coco, 14, and Treacle, 10, through the park last Thursday morning when she saw the dog, called Jack, fly past her.

He continued to chase the squirrel around 16ft (5m) up a tree before he reached a fork between branches and got stuck.

This prompted Kelly, 51, and his owner to try and coax Jack, which she believes is a Jack Russell cross, down from the tree in Clarence Park, Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset.

After around 30 minutes the pair were considering ringing the fire brigade when two passing men offered to help and rescued Jack.

‘They were brave enough and said they’d go up there and get him,’ Kelly told Metro.

‘The owner was calling him and calling him but he wouldn’t come down. We were going to call the fire brigade because he didn’t know how to get down.

‘Luckily these two young guys in tracksuits came past and said they’d help.’

Kelly Brooks, a mother-of-two with two grandchildren, said: ‘The owner was so relieved when she got him down.

‘She said she was used to him chasing squirrels but said he’d never got up a tree before.

‘As soon as he was down she put him on a lead and took him off.’

Kelly, a former retail worker who took up photography in February, walks her dogs in the park three times a day and believes the woman was not local.

She also didn’t get the names of the two men who helped rescue Jack.

She said the squirrels are very tame in the park because so many people come and feed them, meaning there are lots for dogs to chase.

Describing the moment he ran up the tree, she told Metro: ‘We were in shock.

‘I thought “how the bloody hell did he get up there?” He ran so fast up it without looking back.

‘We (Kelly and the dog’s owner) were both standing in shock calling him down.

‘But he wasn’t taking any notice of the owner or me. He was just trying to find the squirrel.

‘Then he realised where he was and probably thought “how am I going to get down?”‘
