Marks & Spencer plans to open 12 new shops on former Homebase sites over the next 14 months.

Ten new M&S food shops and two full line stores will welcome shoppers in places like Abingdon, Cannock, Farnham, Godalming and Northampton.

The investment on former Homebase sites will create over 550 new jobs.

Two of the shops, in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and Cannock, Staffordshire, will open their doors as soon as this year.

One of the new outlets will break an M&S record for its size.

A new food hall planned for Godalming, Surrey, will be their largest standalone food store ever.

M&S’s expansion forms part of the retail giant’s ‘rotation and renewal programme’, which aims to deliver 420 larger and more modern stores.

These new renewal stores promise to include larger car parks, brand new coffee bakeries.

They will also offer an expanded frozen section and more spacious aisles for customers to shop in.

The opening follows on from six food stores and two full line stores, in Dundee and Washington Galleries, that M&S welcomed last year.

The company’s chief executive Stuart Machin said of the plans: ‘Investing in new and renewed stores is one of our key transformation priorities.

‘Securing these highly desirable sites in priority locations will accelerate this strategy, drive further growth in our M&S food business and most importantly give our customers the best possible M&S shopping experience.’

The news comes as M&S faced continued disruption from a cyber attack.

The high street shop was targeted by hackers in April, which disrupted contactless payments and Click and Collect – just one of many major retailers that have been hacked recently.

The retailer then confirmed that customer data had been stolen, although it said no passwords or card details were accessed.

M&S and customers face further disruption from the attack, expected to last through to July.

Its operating profits will be reduced by around £300 million due to the impact of the attack, M&S warned.
