Mystery surrounds the discovery of a set of human bones that have washed up on a beach in Devon.

Archaeologists have been drafted in to analyse the remains and determine how old the bones are.

The body was discovered on Saturday afternoon at Saunton Sands and part of the beach was closed off while investigations took place.

Police are still on scene today while enquiries are carried out.

Images taken at the scene by locals show a large cordon surrounding some small holes, with detectives seen studying a laptop nearby.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘Officers were called at 2.50pm on Saturday 11 October following the discovery of human bones at Saunton Sands beach.

‘A scene guard remains in place while the items are recovered.

‘Police enquiries are ongoing.’

The beach is located near the village of Saunton on the North Devon coast near Braunton, which is popular with locals for longboard surfing.

The discovery comes after a human bone was found inside a plastic carrier bag near Brixham harbour last week.

The investigation into the bone found at Brixham is still ongoing.
